Delivery in the Sky

Switzerland’s postal service began tests of mail and parcel deliveries by drones on July 7. The technology aims to be used especially at hilly areas of the Alps. Switzerland is a famous mountainous nation, characterized by many remote and isolated villages. So, an unmanned drone delivery service could be quite effective there. The robotic postmen could be particularly useful in emergency situations or in carrying mail that requires extra security or safeguards.

The drone has four propellers, and it can carry up to 1kg and fly about 10km when fully charged. Matternet, the drone’s manufacturer in the United States, developed a program that enables the device to fly autonomously through secure flight paths. In addition, the Swiss postal service said that it will likely be about five years before it uses drones widely. In the meantime, technical issues, such as its battery life, will be tested and improved.

If these flying postmen are used in the future, there could be fewer mishaps associated with mail delivery. In Switzerland specifically, deliveries would not be hindered by the rough, mountainous terrain or geographic isolation. People might be waiting for their parcels or letters while looking up the sky! 스위스의 우체국이 7월 7일에 무인기에 의한 편지와 소포 배달 테스트를 시작했다. 그 기술은 알프스 산맥의 고지대에서 특히 사용될 것을 목표로 한다. 스위스는 유명한 산악 국가로, 마을들이 멀고 고립된 것이 특징이다. 따라서, 무인기 배달 서비스는 그곳에서 꽤 효과적일 수 있다. 그 기계 배달부는 특히 긴급 상황 또는 추가 보안이나 안전 장치가 필요한 편지를 운반하는 데에 유용할 수 있다. 무인기는 4개의 프로펠러를 가지고 있고, 1kg까지 나를 수 있으며 완전 충전시 10km를 날 수 있다. 무인기의 미국 생산사인 Matternet은 그 장치가 안전 비행 항로를 자율적으로 날게 해 주는 프로그램을 개발했다. 그리고, 스위스 우체국은 무인기를 상용화하기까지는 약 5년이 걸릴 것이라고 말했다. 한편, 배터리 수명과 같은 기술적 문제가 시험되고 개선될 것이다. 이러한 하늘을 나는 우체부들이 미래에 이용된다면, 우편 배달과 관련된 작은 사고들이 더 적어질 수 있을 것이다. 특히 스위스에서는, 거친 산악 지형과 지리적 고립에 배달이 방해받지 않을 것이다. 사람들은 하늘을 올려다보면서 자신의 소포와 편지를 기다릴 것이다!
